The Greene’s Release perspective of PTSD is very simplistic – I will use my own experience as an example.
Coming from Australia where the weather is mild all year round, I was not prepared in any way for what I experienced during 3 horrific hurricanes.
The first sat on top of us for nearly 24 hours, while I watched in terror as the limbs of our 50 foot high tree bent down to touch the ground. The eye of the second knocked that same tree onto our house, as our roof flew across the lake and our ceilings became waterfalls. It was 4 months before we could leave our home and see normalcy in the world around us – no gas, stop lights, food, hot water, electricity, telephone.
I didn’t realize how shocked I was at first, as there were too many things to do
- no time to feel my emotions. Then, a couple of years later when the repairs were finally nearing completion, I heard the news of an impending direct hit from another hurricane and began to shake uncontrollably. Although I was trying to put on a brave face for my family, for a week until the danger passed,
I was overcome with the same terror.
You could see it in the faces of the people at the supermarket, stocking up on supplies. An eerie stare of disbelief was etched on their faces – just like after the last and biggest hurricane.
My own healing came about when, after a week, I finally realized what was happening to me. I deliberately watched the weather channel to trigger myself, then followed my feelings inside and used the Greene’s Release Technique to release the shock of the original incident. I then spent a week bringing my anxiety levels back down to their natural base level, and went in search of the beliefs I had formed about the weather and my safety.
Each year since we have had many hurricane warnings, yet none have come near and I feel perfectly safe – no reaction at all.
So What Is PTSD?
The simple explanation is that something very traumatic happened to shock and scare you so much, that you stored this memory and emotion in your unconscious mind – beyond your conscious awareness.
Yet, your automatic feelings and reactions come from your unconscious mind
- that’s filled with fear, shock and terror. So you continually live the uncontrollable effects of the original event.
True relief from the symptoms of PTSD is only possible by accessing and releasing the stored shock of the event.
We fill our beings with horror and shock and devastation, then are surprised when we feel the repercussions.
What you feel is perfectly normal! It’s what you are currently doing to attempt to ignore your natural reactions, that isn’t normal.
