Phobia Definition

Phobias are the most common mental disorder in the United States
- effecting more than 10% of the population – mostly women.

Phobias make everyday life terrifying. You’re always on alert and never able to relax. First you’re hesitant, then you start avoiding certain situations, and finally end up stopping them all together. All because of this so called irrational fear that you have absolutely no control of.

It’s embarrassing to have to admit that you can’t go outside to your clothes line because there are spiders on it. Or that you won’t be able to attend the party because you can’t get back inside your front door when it’s dark. You might even turn down a job offer if you have to ride the elevator to get to the office.

People really do think you are strange, but there is nothing strange about this fear. It is real – and your reaction to it is perfectly normal!

So what is a phobia exactly?

A phobia is an overwhelming fear of an object or situation that in reality, poses little or no actual danger – which is why it is called an irrational fear.

This type of fear is much more powerful than a normal fear however. It is an intense panic response that makes people jump out of moving cars when a spider is seen, avoid visiting friends that have dogs, or even refuse essential medical treatment that could possibly involve needles.

Unfortunately, the distress is compounded by the fact that sufferers cannot relax and enjoy life because they have to go to great lengths to avoid the object or situation that is feared, which compromises their day-to-day functioning.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, the key to diagnosing a phobic disorder is that the fear must be excessive and disproportionate to the situation. Most people who fear heights would not avoid visiting a friend who lived on the top floor of a tall building; however a person with a phobia of heights would. Fear alone does not distinguish a phobia – both fear and avoidance must be evident.

Phobias are much more common than people realize. Actually, they are the third most prevalent psychiatric disorder, affecting more than 12% of the population – mostly women.

However, this of little comfort to the person experiencing this gut-wrenching fear so strongly that it paralyzes them.

Types of Phobias

There are three types of phobias:

  • Social phobias — fear of social situations.
  • Agoraphobia — fear of being trapped in an inescapable place or situation.
  • Specific phobias — fear of a specific object (such as snakes).

There are four major types of specific phobias:

  • The natural environment — fear of lightening, water, storms, etc.
  • Animal — fear of snakes, rodents, spiders, etc.
  • Medical — fear of seeing blood, receiving injections, visiting a doctor, etc.
  • Situational — fear of bridges, leaving the home, driving, etc.

Common Phobias

  • Fear of the dark
  • Fear of spiders
  • Fear of animals, dogs or cats
  • Fear of snakes
  • Fear of heights
  • Fear or closed spaces
  • Fear of storms
  • Fear of needles and injections
  • Fear of public speaking
  • Fear of flying
  • Fear of germs

Phobia Reactions

People with phobias try to avoid what they are afraid of. If they cannot, they may experience a number of symptoms including:

  • Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Overwhelming panic
  • An uncontrollable need to flee

Phobia Treatment

This message is for everyone who has a phobia…

They say you can’t dissolve a fear – YOU CAN!
They say you have to face your fears – YOU DON’T!
They say that exposure therapy is the only way – IT IS NOT!
They say you have to learn how to control your fear – YOU DON’T!

If you are terrified of public speaking, high places, malls, spiders, crowds, doctors, insects, leaving your home, flying, medical procedures, or any of the more than two hundred recognized phobias, I am here to tell you that you can dissolve your phobia – completely and permanently! Just like I have..

And …

  • You don’t have to undergo emotional torture
  • Repeat the process over and over again
  • Face your fears
  • Or spend thousands of dollars

Phobia releases are usually easy to locate in the subconscious, and therefore quick releases to complete. Here are some real life examples of phobia causes that were discovered during Greene’s Release sessions:

  • Fear of the dark – a 4-year-old was frightened during a power blackout.
  • Fear of clowns – a young child answered the door, and a neighbor wearing a costume jumped out from behind the bushes shouting “Boo!”
  • Fear of confined spaces – during a game of hide and seek, two boys placed their very young brother in the top shelf of a linen closet, then forgot about him.
  • Fear of boats – being in a boat when it capsized and sank.
  • Fear of doctors – a child’s mother was very ill and then died.
  • Fear of spiders – a father and his sons thought it was fun to repeatedly tease and chase the only daughter with spiders hidden in their palms.

They may not seem like events that are dramatic enough to match the fear you now feel, but remember they happened to a child, who was really terrified at that time.

The fear you feel now is that child’s terror!

Even if you can remember the incident, you are doing so from your adult perspective which means that you are not privy to the child’s thoughts and feelings that are stored in the subconscious, and so you are unable to resolve it.

During a phobia release session you match the two together by using your adult mind (that is not scared) to locate and then neutralize the emotional component of the child’s memories. This is why it is easier to dissolve phobias from an adult’s perspective. The adult has no fear of this particular item or event.

You can either dissolve your phobia on your own with the help of our Heal Your Self workbook or during a private release session.

All you have to do is decide that enough is enough and that it is time to stop living with this fear. Then you are ready to do it.

The trick is being able to access the actual stored traumatic memory, which is what Greene’s Release specializes in. This is how release sessions work:

Two 1-2 hour sessions are booked, a day apart. The phobia release is performed during the first session, and then the second is to debrief, make sure you are comfortable and answer questions.

One phobia will be permanently dissolved after your Phobia Release Sessions. There is no need to redo anything, or for ongoing sessions for this issue.

It is a one time, permanent result.

It may sound complicated but the process is very straightforward. In fact, phobias are some of the easiest problems to resolve with the Greene’s Release Technique because they elicit such a strong fear response. Release results are always the same. I have had 100% success with phobia releases.

The results of these sessions are quite remarkable!

Eliminated Clown Phobia

A 60 year of woman had suffered from a fear of clowns and face makeup since early childhood. Her children couldn’t go to the circus, trick-or-treating for Halloween, or dress up for birthday parties which filled this woman with guilt.

After applying the Greene’s Release Technique her phobia dissipated and she realized how a simple gesture had created this debilitating fear. She then went on to use the Greene’s Release Technique to dissolve the guilt she had been carrying for decades. I am happy to report that she now dresses up as a clown every Halloween.

Dissolved Medical Phobia

This was an interesting release. A 25 year old man’s life was paralyzed by his fear of medical issues and procedures. He couldn’t be near sick people, visit the doctor, get married and have children who would need medical care, or even engage in activities where he may injure himself. His life was paralyzed.

One phobia session dissolved his phobia completely. He is now living a productive, happy life without restriction. Every day is a new adventure as he catches up with what he has missed.

Vanished Spider Phobia

A 38 year old woman had a debilitating fear of spiders. It controlled every aspect of her life because spiders were everywhere. Fear consumed every moment of every day. Several therapists didn’t help alleviate her fears beyond the initial moment.

After just one single phobia session which was surprisingly easy, she decided to test out her results. Nothing. Not a glimmer of emotional response to one, two or even three spiders. She is still phobia free years later.

Traditional Phobia Treatment

Although Greene’s Release and the psychological community both recognize the subconscious link to phobias (discussed in What is a Phobia Podcast), Greene’s Release has discovered how to access the actual subconscious memory that triggers the fear response (see Phobia Treatment podcast), while the psychological community has not. This means that the psychological community’s only option is to focus on controlling the fear response rather than healing its underlying cause. This is why you have to repeat their control methods every time your internal memory triggers a response.

There are six commonly prescribed psychological treatments for phobias:

1. Systematic Desensitization
2. Cognitive Therapy
3. Hypnosis
4. Medication
5. Relaxation
6. Imagination

Psychotherapists often suggest multiple treatments, which require long-term repeated exposure to the fear – success rates are very poor. Understandably, people are hesitant to seek treatment until their phobia begins to seriously impact their daily life.

Systematic Desensitization

Systematic Desensitization repeatedly exposes you to the object or situation of your fear, based on the theory that you can’t sustain constant levels of anxiety for long, and you’ll end up being calm around the source of your fear. It involves gradual encounters with the fear stimulus, first in your imagination and then in reality. You absolutely must be willing to feel your fear repeatedly, in order to become desensitized to it.

Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive Therapy (or counseling) involves talking to rationalize the fear. It aims to help you understand the cycle of negative thought patterns, and offer ways to control your thoughts and feelings of anxiety. You must be willing to endure some discomfort and make a consistent effort over a prolonged period of time.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is said to help people reprogram subconscious “programs” that may be responsible for a phobia. When these programs are “de-bugged” the symptoms of phobia often are minimized. Because many people are not able to reach the actual subconscious mind, this treatment often fails.

Medications

Medications are used to artificially control the panic experienced during a phobic situation, as well as the anxiety caused by anticipation of that situation.

Relaxation

Relaxation aims to substitute the fear response with a relaxation response in the presence of the phobic stimulus. Relaxation is incompatible with feeling fearful or having anxiety, so it is thought that the relaxation response counteracts the fear response.

Neuro Linguistic Programming

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) uses imagination and subconscious language programming techniques to alter fear reactions to phobias.

Phobia Stories

As I look back at my phobias, I see them like a comedy show because I no longer feel the terror that I lived with for most of my adult life.

I do however appreciate the paralyzing fear and anxiety that I must have experienced with the following stories that led me to act this way.

The Clothes Line

Having to use an outside clothesline every day was a nightmare I lived with for more than 20 years. I had to create various rituals that enabled me to do this activity, despite it being an everyday chore for everyone else.

I had a special basket to keep the pegs in, and would carefully bring them inside with the wash each day, then soak them in water overnight, or buy new pegs each week and only wash once a week. Sometimes I used rubber gloves so I didn’t have to touch the spiders webs on the pegs.

My clothes often stayed on the line for days on end, until I could convince a friend to get them for me while I stood on a chair, diligently watching for any sign of web or movement.

Once, a lovely elderly neighbor knocked on my door, asking if there were a problem as my clothes had been on the line for 2 weeks, and if she could be of assistance. I smiled, grateful for her non-judgmental help. She even put the clothes straight into the washing machine to be rewashed, as I couldn’t touch them. They dried on an inside clothes rack this time. It was about a year before I used an outside clothesline again.

Son’s Hand

My children became wonderful catchers of Huntsman spiders. I would stand on a chair at the other end of the room with my swipe-a-fly spray in hand, while they stood underneath the beast, ready to place a container on top of the spider when it fell to the floor.

One time, when my eldest was at a sleepover, my son and I decided to be brave and take charge of the monster Huntsman that was keeping us from going to bed. As always, I stood on my kitchen chair at the far end of the hallway, while he stood with bowl in hand, ready to pounce and trap the monster (which would remain under the bowl until a neighbor or friend removed it).

I sprayed the swipe-a-fly and screamed as the spider ran frantically across the ceiling, then dropped. My son ran as fast as he could to cover it and end this drama. But he had forgotten that the new slate floor was harder than the previously carpeted one, and his hand went straight through the glass bowl as he slammed it on the floor.

My son dropped to the floor in shock seeing the blood pouring from his hand. Meanwhile, the spider ran into the office, where the telephone was, and I was left standing on my chair shaking in terror.

After attending to my son’s hand and shock (a regular occurrence due to his disability), and laying him down on the living room floor, I was faced with a dilemma. I needed to get to the phone (we had no cordless phone at that time) which was trapped in a room with the Huntsman spider.

I was brave. I ran for the phone (which was on an extension cord) and called the hospital. My son was fine and didn’t need stitches. The Huntsman ruled the office until a search-and-capture was undertaken by a brave friend the next day.

Long Drive To Work

This episode is the most embarrassing.

As a young bank junior, I secured a lift to and from work each day until I was old enough to get my license. One morning, just after getting into the car, a huge Huntsman climbed out of the dashboard. Well, I screamed so loud that my two companions thought I was dying. They stopped  the car as quickly as possible. Still screaming for them to move so I could get out, I literally jumped over the person next to me and out the door to safety.

The spider had vanished – and we were still 20 minutes drive from work. I had to sit on top of the bench seat headboard, holding my extremely short miniskirt tight around my legs all the way to work.

Since they couldn’t find the spider, I refused to get back into the car for the journey home. I never drove in that car again. Luckily I got my license a few weeks later.

Night Time

Night time is very scary for Arachnophobics (people who have a fear of spiders), as the Australian Huntsmen build huge webs from the gum trees to the houses. You can shine a torch outside and see dozens of black hand shapes everywhere. I just didn’t go out after dark.

When out on a date, I would tell him the safest place to park (where I knew there were no webs). Then I’d make him go to the house, unlock and open the front door, and come back to my side of the car – so I could get out and cower behind him as we both ran as fast as we could inside. It was a well-organized epic.

The Gerbera Daisy

I could not go to bed and leave a Huntsman un-captured. I just couldn’t do it. I would sit up watching the spider until daybreak if necessary.

One night, Dave, my best spider catcher was kind enough to help after a frantic call at midnight. But this spider was being difficult and tested his bravery. So Dave decided to use the fly spray.

Never ever use fly spray on an Australian Huntsman spider. They go psycho. Use swipe-a-fly -It is brilliant!

This spider was running from one end of the house to the other as if in an Olympic race. Poor Dave had no hope of catching it, so we waited for it to run out of steam. Three hours later, the spider was tired and decided to stop running.

I had the prettiest hot pink Gerbera daisy that sat on my kitchen table. Guess where the spider decided to go to sleep? In the center of the daisy. Goodbye daisy, and goodbye spider.

Painting The House

Being a single parent, I often asked for help with capturing spiders. But sometimes I had to be brave and face my other phobias on my own.

One day, while painting the front window frames on the house, I decided that I could get up on the ladder and finish the top edge myself. All I had to do was not look down. It worked brilliantly, and I quickly finished my painting project.

But there was just one small problem: I had to climb down the ladder. I froze. I stood there for 30 minutes trying to convince myself to take that first step, but couldn’t. So instead, I climbed up, onto my flat tin roof.

I was happy on my roof. Drinks, food, and even cigarettes were brought up to me. The hours ticked on and the crowd of neighbors gathered. At one point there were 30 people having a party in my front yard, as I happily sat on my roof.

They all tried, but no-one could convince me to climb down. Finally, as the sun started to set, one neighbor decided that enough was enough. He climbed the ladder, had me lay down on my stomach and then back up to the edge. This poor man, who I barely knew, laid his body across mine and ever so carefully guided me down the ladder.

Everyone cheered!

“You know, I’ve had night terrors for more than 30 years, and I still can’t believe all that came from something so small. Amazing!

I love nighttime now, and lay there in the dark listening to the silence. It is so relaxing. Who would have guessed.”

Online Sessions: Phobias

Are you ready to finish with this fear
and live the life that you deserve?

Phobias are expressions of stored memories (usually from childhood) that are creating havoc in your life and destroying your sense of well-being.

The Greene’s Release Technique provides access to this storehouse to completely heal
and release the impact of this repressed memory.

Two appointments is all it takes to be free of
this past event – permanently!

This is the power of the Greene’s Release Technique.

Specific Phobias

Phobia release sessions are a special service for those people who are suffering the repercussions of specific phobias like:

  • Fear of the dark
  • Fear of spiders
  • Fear of animals, dogs or cats
  • Fear of snakes
  • Fear of heights
  • Fear or closed spaces
  • Fear of storms
  • Fear of needles and injections

The complicated fear and anxieties people experience with social phobias are best addressed with our workbook Heal Your Self, or through our Life Coach services.

Phobia Release Sessions

“I just saw a spider in our living room and
didn’t feel a thing!!

I calmly showed it the door and tried to feel my racing heartbeat but…nothing!

Can’t quite believe this is possible and yet it feels so normal!

You are a genius!
I’m gonna have big smiles all day now.”

Two 1-2 hour sessions are booked, a day apart. The phobia release is performed during the first session, then the second is to validate client comfort after the release, for debriefing and to answer questions.

Phobia releases are usually easy to locate in the subconscious, and therefore quick releases to complete. Here are some real life examples of phobia causes, discovered during Greene’s Release sessions:

  • Fear of the dark – a 4-year-old was frightened during a power blackout.
  • Fear of clowns – a young child answered the door, and a neighbor wearing a costume jumped out from behind the bushes shouting “Boo!”
  • Fear of confined spaces – during a game of hide and seek, two boys placed their very young brother in the top shelf of a linen closet, then forgot about him.
  • Fear of boats – being in a boat when it capsized and sunk.

They may not seem like events dramatic (so you know it will be okay to uncover them during your session) enough to match the fear you now feel, but remember they happened to a child, who was terrified at that time.

It is this child’s fear you now feel!

Even if you can remember the incident now, you are doing so from your adult perspective. You are not privy to the child’s thoughts and feelings stored in the subconscious, and so you are unable to resolve it.

One phobia will be permanently cured after your 3-4 hour Phobia Release Sessions. No need to redo anything, or for ongoing sessions for this issue. It is a one time, permanent result.

Two x 2-hour Sessions cost $250.00 in total, will completely and permanently resolve your traumatic event, and includes the Heal Your Self: A Journey to find You workbook so you may rebuild a wonderful new life for yourself.

Phobia Testimonials

“This is my AMAZING story. Well, its amazing to me :)

I feared spiders for as long as I can remember. It got worse as I got older, until I was on the verge of a panic attack just from seeing one run across the carpet. At 16, I went to see a hypnotist/NLP practitioner.

This guy is no joker, he’s now one of the most successful hypnotists in the UK. I booked a one-on-one session and he talked me into a trance and gave me different ways to look at spiders… giving them personalities, hearing the happy Looney Tunes music when I saw them, etc. He probably placed other suggestions I wasn’t aware of or have since forgotten about.

I left that day and managed to touch a very small spider in my bathroom. I convinced myself I was cured. I wanted so much to be free. But it wasn’t long before I met another creepy crawly and felt my heartrate rushing once again. I acted calmer than before, but deep down I knew it was just a brave front.

Then I began having night terrors in which I woke up screaming in the middle of the night, seeing spiders in my bedroom. The screaming was an involuntary response, as was leaping out of bed and thrashing around the room.

Unfortunately, I was conscious of and remembered all of it. After a few minutes the the hallucinations would dissolve and I would “wake up” to reality. This didn’t stop the experience being truly, utterly terrifying.

Then – just recently – I found a new way to talk to the subconscious mind, called Greene’s Release. Janet Greene (the creator) explained that the hypnosis had merely suppressed my phobia on a conscious level, but deep down the phobia was still there. She talked me through a release session – I can’t explain completely what happens but it is unlike hypnosis or NLP – and I felt a massive relief afterward. In fact, I felt on top of the world.

The very next day (as fate would have it!) I found a Whitetail in my living room. These are big enough to make anyone look twice and are known as attacking spiders in New Zealand, they will jump on you and bite! Normally this would whip me into a frenzy. I TRIED to feel something, anything, because I didn’t want to trick myself this time – but I felt absolutely no fear at all. I calmly got a glass and dealt with it. No rushing heartbeat, no feelings of disgust, no shuddering, or screaming, or fleeing the room for help!

Even thinking about spiders now makes me feel nothing. Janet sourced the root of my phobia and released that terrible emotion and misconception that has been following me around all my life.

This is an amazing technique that goes way beyond hypnosis or NLP or anything else I’ve ever heard of.

If you have a phobia that’s driving you crazy, I urge you to try this. Rebecca
